No hands-on guidance from supervisor
E

I am the only PhD student in a small department (life sciences). My supervisor who is the head of department meets me in his office regularly but he never guided me in the lab. He don't give me protocols and I have to waste a lot of time for mearly searching the protocols. In addition he expect a lot of results every week. If the technique is not working he thinks that I am not hardworking (it happens oftenly as I need to optimise the protocol myself). He has worked in UK/USA during his post-doc/early career and he used to say people work independently in UK and USA. I am a bit frustrated. Is the attitude of my supervisor normal?

Publishing essays in edited books
E

Hi
I meant publishing in a peer-reviewed journal is better than conference book. If you publish your abstract in the conference you can publish this data in some journal as well but if you publish a full lengh article in some conference book/proceeding etc. you dont have the right to publish this data once again. Lets see what other people say.
This may not be the case in huminities.

Publishing essays in edited books

Hi corrine
Is it not surprinsing that you are presenting your work without your supervisor as a co-author. Secondly you are going to publish your work in a conference report instead of a peer-reviewed journal. I think you will not have the right to publish this work in some journal latter on (I am taling in the context of conference/journals in scinece). So if it is a book chapter, go ahead but you need to be careful, if you going to publish your own data.

Do reviews, book chapters etc help in the final viva
E

Hi all, Recently there were some posts showing the importance of research papers for final viva. I was just wondering if it is only the research paper that is important OR review article, book chapter, letter to editor etc are helpful as well?

PhD, articles and journal peer review
E

Yes the review of a thesis is as stringent as the review of a journal article but this does not mean that this data can be published in any journal without review. There might be for instance 100 journals in a certain domain and how will we decide in which journal it will be published. It will depend upon the scope of the journal as well as quality of work. So we need a second review. All students get PhD by going through a viva/review but every one don’t able to publish in top quality journals. Do you agree?

Poster presentation: How will I present?

There are 7 Coffee + Posters sessions (1 hour each) in the programm. I wish not to receive someone on third and fourth day (becuase I want to see other posters myself as well).

Poster presentation: How will I present?
E

My abstract has been accepted as a poster presentation in an upcoming conference. I have already presented my work as an oral presentation but I did not bother to enter poster hall, so don’t have an idea.
I searched the forum and found some useful advices but need some more.

1. Should I give an overview of my research to everyone who makes a mistake to have a look on my poster or should wait for the questions?
2. Conference is 4 days long; it seems difficult to stand by my poster all the time.
thanks
