Hi there,
I would really appreciate some of your time to discuss with me the concept of online Personalised Advertising.
This is online advertising that is sent to you via email, otherwise known as Direct Marketing. This is when a company uses your personal information, when you sign up to something, for example Amazon, or Tesco and they then send you personalised messages to hopefully increase your chances of purchasing further with them. For example recommendations for a product similar to one you have already purchased.
Another form of personalised advertising is when you are browsing online and are shopping and you have items in your shopping basket, you then go elsewhere online, to other websites, and at some point the previous website uses whats termed a 'pop-up Ad' to remind you of your items in the shopping basket. Would this generate sales for you? Would you just ignore it? Would you be less inclined to purchase because of the personalised advertising?
What do you think of online personalised advertising? Is it intrusive, annoying, or useful because you are advertised to about products or services you are interested in?
Another form of personalised advertising is when a website stores the data you input, for example name, sex, age, location, and interests into their sign up procedure, this data storing is also known as 'cookies' where personal data is used to track and monitor consumers online behaviour. This data storing then used against you to personally advertise products or services to you whilst you visit the site, you will see the personalised ads and perhaps be more inclined to purchase or click through because you have an interest in the product or service and the website knows this. Do you think this would be the case? What would you normally do if you have witnessed this? Do you think it is intrusive? Do you mind it?
An EU Law has come into focus about online advertising? Have you heard about it? What do you think about it?
For those that don't know the EU online advertising Law has been in place for 2 months, since the 26th May 2011. It is designed to inform consumers whilst visiting websites that the website uses the data storing capability otherwise known as Cookies to store their personal information and use it to personally advertise to them. There is an opt-out option to opt-out of cookie storing so that your details won't be tracked. Advertisers argue that it offers a service to allow consumers to only be advertised about something of interest to them. What do you think? Do you think you will opt out of cookie usage? Do you really care? Do you like personalised advertising?
Overall do you think that the EU Cookie Law will affect personalised advertising or do you think many people will keep cookie usage?
Do you believe that a personalised ad would make you purchase something more than if you were just browsing?
