Desperate for funding and out of options?

V

Hi I'm new and very desperate. I got a 2:2 in Microbiology. That means I can't get funding from rsearch councils or whatever as they only fund people who get a 2:1. This is the case for sciences.

I have checked every bank and none can offer me a loan which will cover the course I got accepted to (MSc medical microbiology at Surrey).

I can't get a graduate loan as I don't work.

I can't use a career development loan as it only goes up to £8000 and the tuition fees will reach nearly £13 altogether (it's an enchanced masters).

I can't take a normal loan as I don't work and can't afford to start paying back straight away.

I feel like I'm looked everywhere, has anyone got any advice please?!!

H

You can still try and apply for funding, many people here have 2.2s and funding.

Can you defer for a year? Maybe work full time, save up and get the rest as a loan?

V

Hi I can't apply for funding (I checked many places).

I would have to have a 2:1. The examples you know of probably are for ARTS. If not can you tell me the organisations please?

I have considered working but I'm having trouble finding work. I don't know why, it never was this hard before I finished my degree. I'm 24 so I rather not put off the masters for too long.

H

I have a 2.2 and got funding for my Masters but you automatically applied for funding when you applied for the masters (it was in Pure Science).

Not sure which organisations you could contact for funding.

Funding is pretty tricky for Masters anyway so you might have to think about getting a job in something different just to help you.

V

Surrey doesn't offer funding for that degree.

As I said before for science a 2:1 at least is needed to get funding.

H

Well SOME science Masters courses have funding available for some of the people on the course (like I just said, I did a science Masters with funding). It seems that yours doesn't so you should contact the department and find out whether there are any studentships you can apply for.

You should also consider how important this Masters is to your career. Are you planning on an academic career (PhD etc) or want to go into industry.

V

My point is mine doesn't.

H

well if you see my post, I have stated that your's doesn't.

Sometimes theres no point bothering with people who expect the answer to their problems dished out for them on a plate without any work whatsoever.

J

So apply to a university that does offer funding.

My reply was to VeryPoor, not you H

Wow you're rude! As you can see from my original post I already done a lot of research, that's why I came here because I'm desperate. Please don't post in my thread if you're going to flame me.

As for applying to somewhere else, I am awaiting replies from 2 other unis but I don't think I've been accepted. I'm looking for advise for paying for this particular course.

J

It's probably unintentional, but you (VeryPoor) are coming across as a bit helpless and irritable. Understandable and I sympathise, but people are just trying to offer practical suggestions.

H

I'm not trying to flame you, I was trying to help you and I found YOU to be quite rude.

I understood that there was no funding for your course. So I asked you a few questions which you ignored completely and said "My point is mine doesn't." How do you expect people do help you and give you advice without knowing more of the situation.

V

I came here for advice on funding, if no one can give me advice fine, but don't excuse me of being irritable and not doing enough research over nothing!

I explained the situation in detail in my first post, but I think I won't bother with this forum considering how I'm treated!

J

I think you were given advice. Unfortunately it wasn't helpful to you, but that doesn't mean the intentions of the "advisors" were not genuine.

You have just convinced me, at any rate, that your irritability is intentional so I'm signing off this topic. Good luck.
