MA or Msc with a Third class honours

S

Hello everyone,

I'm a french student. I have just got my bachelor in the University Pantheon-ASSAS in Paris in June. I want to continue my postgraduate studies in the UK (in preference, in London or Manchester), but unfortunately for me I have always found masters where the minimum required is a lower second class undergraduate degree. During the years, I get in the 1st year 10,15/20, in the 2nd year 10,64/20 and this year 11,25/20, so you understand that I have a third class honours. I'm 22 years old and I want to have my masters this year without doing a break for work experience. I expected to begin in January and before this take English courses to get the IELTS.
Moreover, I graduate in Economics, and for the masters I prefer a Masters in Accounting and Finance, or in Management.

I have a lot of stress this time, I can't find an university or school where I can get in, and i'm decided to leave France and do my masters this year.
Please, I'm asking for your help, if you knew a list of university where I can apply with a third class honours it will be very helpful.

Thank you.

J

Do you have a specialisation in the accounts or do you just want to do plain ones? I know this is a response you have likely already heard but why don't you try the academic schools you wish to go to? Ask the administrations secretary or something to find out.

Hi,

As far as I am aware, for direct entry into most, if not all, MA / MSc programmes you need at least a 2:2.

However, some universities run, in certain subjects, a PGCert programme (first third of an MA / MSc) with little / no entry criteria which, if you are successful in will then allow you to continue on to the MA / MSc.I'm not too sure if there's any of these that run in accounting or finance but might be worth searching / contacting people.

I've little to add except to say you won't obtain any funding with a 3rd Class Degree for the PGCert or the Masters if you are successful. So be prepared to self-finance if this is the route you want to follow.

You might be able to obtain a career development loan, though this may be a costly exercise.

At Masters, we did have people with Higher National Diploma or 3rd Class degree take a Post-grad Diploma (effectively 2/3 of a Masters) alongside the Masters people (some components of the Masters were omitted from later in the course) and if good enough, they were upgraded to Masters for the later stages.

Have you considered the Open University? Pay as you go modules. You can open an OUSBA and pay monthly (although I'm not 100% if this is the case for international students but the OU is international in that you can take the course in various countries, you access learning materials online or they post out course books). You can clock up enough credits to get a full MA and/or obtain PGcert/Dip along the way too, incase you find you can't/don't want to progress to full MA. No entry requirements other than having a degree. The OU is now better thought of than people might think as lots of top professors/Drs teach OU alongside other uni commitments and also because of the level of independent study required (although you will have an allocated tutor and you can choose to attend/or not, lectures). The beauty of OU is you can study full or part time, allowing you to work at the same time if needs be.
