I am close to submitting my dissertation and the experience has been the worst of my life. I have had no help from my supervisor. He didn't even know how to use the software required. Even during the taught modules I received little help from the academics and a majority of my emails were never answered. My subject is nuclear engineering, by the way. The entire experience has damaged my mental health and I have become very paranoid. I have found the entire postgraduate system to inefficient and indifferent. In fact, I sent my dissertation to my supervisor for him to check before I submit and he hasn't even replied. I am fed up and going to submit it next week, with or without his blessing. Many staff I found to be indifferent and unfriendly towards students. In fact one quit in January. I could never under any circumstances do a PhD as this entire experience has been torturous.
A bit difficult to comment on your situation (if that is what you are wanting) as I guess it differs from institution to institution. It is a lot more independent that undergraduate study, but one can still expect to receive support and replies to email etc. So maybe your particular course was just a bad one in terms of those things. My experience wasn't like this. Well done for getting through it and good luck with your results etc.
