The Brilliant Club is an award winning charity that recruits, trains and places doctoral and post-doctoral researchers in schools to deliver university-style teaching to small groups of high performing pupils. As part of each placement our tutors work with two groups of six pupils and deliver a series of high-level tutorials that takes them beyond the curriculum and helps them to develop the knowledge, skills and ambition necessary to secure places at top universities. Many of the young people we work with have no family history of higher education. PhD tutors often design courses based on their research, including ‘Fighting Cancer with Sound Bullets’, ‘The Victorian Ghost Story’, ‘An Introduction to General Relativity’, and ‘Free Will, Luck and Moral Responsibility’.
We're looking for tutors and we'd like to hear from you if you might be interested. We recruit tutors from across the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences. Our application process is competitive - around half of applicants are selected to be a tutor.
In 2013-2014, over 250 Brilliant Club PhD tutors worked in 200 schools, with 5,000 pupils. In 2014-15, we will work with schools in and around London, the Midlands, the East of England and the North East. Our Year 6 and Year 7/8 placements run concurrently in the second half of the autumn term. Spring placements will be with Year 9/10 pupils, and summer placements with Year 12 pupils. All placements begin with a training weekend, and include six tutorials and a university visit with pupils. Researchers earn £450 per placement.
