THE ETHICS RUPTURE:
SUMMIT ON ALTERNATIVES TO RESEARCH-ETHICS REVIEW26-28 OCTOBER 2012:

26-28 OCTOBER 2012:

Many scholars have noted the inadequacy of the current systems of research-ethics review in light of the needs of researchers in the social sciences and the humanities. To that end, I am organizing a summit on research ethics, ""The Ethics Rupture: A Summit about Alternatives to Formal Research-Ethics Review." The Summit will be held 26-28 October 2012 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
I should underscore the fact that because supporters of the prevailing research-ethics regimes are given much air-time on official agendas, listservs, and the like, the Summit aims at bringing together scholars who see these regimes as problematic. Rather than dwelling on the shortcomings of these regimes, however, the Summit hopes to arrive at a clear statement about possible alternative(s)– something that researchers in the social sciences and the humanities will find useful and desirable. The statement will also send a signal to policy makers about the inadequacy of current regimes in setting an ethics framework for researchers in the social sciences and the humanities.
If you are interested in the Summit, here is what I would like to receive from you:
(a) would you be interested in coming? What scholarly paper would you likely present in light of the themes of the Summit?
(b) names of other researchers you know who might like to be invited.
(c) your wish to be part of a small working group that could work on a statement during the Summit that would articulate the results for wider dissemination.
I look forward to hearing from you. Will C. van den Hoonaard, UNB, Canada
