This question is mainly directed to the science PhD students. I was wondering how many of ye have access 24hrs to the lab/write up area. My previous university had this and I just took it for granted that every university offered this to their PhD students but my current university does not which is very annoying and something I wish had found out before I came as I often like to do my research work late in the evening/night as it is very quiet and nearly everyone is gone so you can really focus on what you are doing and not have to worry about waiting to use machines or other lab equipment and plus it allows you to really turn the music up loud!
We have 24/7 swip card access also. Nothing better than setting a PCR plate up late in the evening with no distractions (like people wanting to strike up a conversation when your on well 200 or so of 384!!!). The only stipulation in our department is that if your working outside of normal working hours you have to have an "Out of Hours Form" complete - once complete this doesn't expire. This is mainly a measure to stop people who are not deemed competent (normally very new students) from working outside of hours but is granted without questions to 99% of people.
