I am thinking of applying for a PHd but I dont know if i am eligible. My degree years weer hard which cost me a 3rd Honours (Software Engineering) as a result. I also have an Msc in Computer Security (Pass with Distinction). Do I have any chances of being accpted for a Phd???
I have a 2:1 and an msc and am finding it very hard to get a place. the competition is tough, A levels matter to some places and alot of applicant have a 1st. But al is not lost!!! I have decided to fund myself and so far have been having more luk with approching it that way :)
It is difficult to get accepted with a third class degree. You are very unlikely to qualify for any UK research council funding. However your distinction in your MSc will help. Demand for software engineers in industry is high, as are the wages offered which means that demand for PhDs is less than in some other subjects. You need to look for projects funded by other bodies or for a job as a research assistant.
As we always recommend talk to your tutors from your MSc course. They know the subject area and the relevant research groups. If anybody knows what your realistic chances are they will.
