Can I have your opinions on this one please:
I can't decide whether I should put my most recent (teaching) job or my PhD in the "Current/most recent employment" section of the application form, for a tutor/lecturer job application at a UK university. The reason why I'm confused is, although now I'm working from home, initially my PhD contract comes with residency. And my most recent proper job goes back to 2004-5, which will look too ancient and too part-time. This section is on the first page of the form, that's why I worry that this might make them ignore the rest of the form assuming I was out of employment since 2005.
I would start with what you are doing now (downplay the 'working from home' bit). Not that I'm an expert, but I see the application form as my only shot to get the shortlisters interested enough to want to meet me - so you're right to worry about how things appear (first impressions and all that), especially if there is a lot of competition for the job. Once you're in front of them you can talk about everything in more depth (obviously!) - it's all about grabbing their attention and interest in you as a real contender.
Good Luck
What do u mean, 'working from home'? If you are still working from home on a PhD then surely it doesn't matter where u are working? But then again, maybe I'm missing the point....
I didn't teach or demonstrate during my PhD (I'm scared of Cambridge undergrads) and so my last job was back in 2003 (part time when doing my undergrad) - this went on a recent application form and I didn't get the impression that this was a problem at all...
Thanks lr261. That's also very useful.
The reason why I mentioned that I work from home in my question was related to my PhD contract being attached to a "residency". My contract has not changed, it still says Phd Researcher/Resident blah blah on it. But I have left my university town 1 year into my PhD. And the residency side of the things are a bit more faded in practice, as residency requires being there. On the other hand, the residency aspect of it makes my PhD a job in a way. I don't know if I make sense...
