Are there any benefits of applying for a job which I won't get and even if I did would be really difficult to get to but would be the most fantastic job ever?

P

I've seen a wonderful job at a very prestigious museum and amazingly I have all the requirements. (A Phd is not one of them) But I know there will be people who have these and more. It would be so brilliant to work there with the collection but I know I probably would not get an interview and if I did it's not very likely I would get the job. But is it worth applying for the experience and perhaps getting my name known for the future.
Also if I did get it (!!) it would be very difficult to get there so I think what is the point. But for something so good and prestigious I think I would be able to find a way round it.
So all in all it's not really a goer but should I apply anyway?

If you're eligible, keen and could see yourself making it work then of course you should go for it! And as you say, no harm in getting them familiar with your name for the future :-)

well, if you don't apply you will definitely not get the job. Go for it :-)

Go for it! The worst thing that can happen is that you won't get it, and then it will be a really good experience for you to communicate your passion for the job, and any job (which i think is a really important thing!). And, by applying for it, there is a chance that you just might get it, and any of the other problems about getting there can be overcome. Just do it!!!

I had a similar job come up recently... I didn't get it, but I don't regret applying. I think I was a strong candidate and if I had finished my PhD, I would have had more of a shot. It was a great experience to think about the skills I have and how to market them, etc. Go for it - you never know! And the way I saw it was that I had nothing to lose. You don't want to be stuck thinking 'what if...?'

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll give it a go. Nothing to lose and all that!

You should definitely apply. Even if you did not get the job you will learn an incredible amount from the experience. You will learn about what exactly they are looking for-if you don't get it, you can request feedback about your performance and you will be so much better prepared and ready for the next time that dream job comes up. And, you never know, you may get it OR it may lead to some other opportunity from the contact and networking.

You have absolutely nothing to lose but a lot to learn from the experience-good luck!

Well, I've done it. The application has gone off. Let's see what happens now.
