I'm in the humanities and failed my science o level but I am watching the BBC coverage of the LHC experiment and am finding it fascinating. I got up early to watch - initially because I was worried the world might end but it's really interesting. I just wondered if there were any physicists out there and what your views were on the whole thing.
I'm really surprised it hadn't been more widely known until lately. Having a bet with the lads in the house that it will do some damage (hey, I'm doing a PhD - I have to be all doom and gloom!), although am wondering how do I collect if existence itself ceases to exist!
I do hope that the research leads to some worthwhile and practical results, rather than makinga few high-level research boffins more famous for essentially having their heads stuck up their own black holes :p Of course if there is any practical results (new energy sources, etc.), this will quickly be swallowed up by the oil companies and their sleazy ilk ... this research is making me cynical and as bitter as a bunch of out of date lemons.
Well I suppose telling my supervisor to talk a long walk off a short pier yesterday seems a bit foolish now in retrospect!
The best advertising physics has had in years...
I think its cool, but Sir David King I think (former Chief Scientific Officer guy) actually said a few days ago that we shouldn't waste money on things like this, and concentrate money and minds on global climate change, poverty reduction etc. I'm not sure if I entirely agree; obviously science funding should be increased to do both!
Yes very exciting... I had heard about this ages ago - from the very highbrow source of a Dan Brown book hahaha. But didn't know it was launching today until I saw the funky Google logo.
Anyway I don't think we have to worry about the world ending today, that won't happen until they start doing collisions surely? Which are not starting until the official unveiling on Oct 21st - according to Wikipedia!!! Better enjoy your last 40 days of existence folks :-)
What if that is really true??? Not that I believe it is or anything... but if it was??? Who here would spend their last 40 days on earth working on their PhD (if they knew it was the last 40 days)??? Not me anyway :p
It's already broken and will be out of action for at least two months!!!
