Do you ever get indigestion where some stomach acid/vomit bubbles up your throat and into the back of your mouth to give you a horrible taste sensation?
Last night, I was asleep and this happened with such a volume of liquid as to make me wake up choking on it and I involuntarily spat it out everywhere. Presumably this is not classed as vomitting as there was no 'heaving' it just sort of bubbled up my throat.
Anyone ever experienced anything like this? I am quite worried about it, as it was such a strange thing to happen. I found it hard to get back to sleep afterwards and was very conscious of my levels of indigestion, worried that I would again find myself choking.
If no-one has heard of this, I will take the opportunity now to coin the phrase 'Chronic indigestion syndrome' (CIS to the layman)
It is acid reflux.. I had it once in my sleep and I woke up choking.. it was not nice.
Best thing to do in my opinion is have some water to drink to dilute the acid a bit and take a rennie or something similar (Magnesium Trisilicate, Calcium Carbonate etc) to neutralise the acid.
I did think that possibly eating that Hot, Sweet and Sour Chinese dish, with home made, dodgy egg fried rice, and rushing it down ASAP without even chewing the chicken about 20 minutes before I hit the sack could have been a contributary factor. I just didn't realise that choking on the stuff while sleeping was within the realms of normal symptoms.
If it's frequent, then maybe it's your diete, stress levels, or some other aspect of lifestyle. Peptobismol, Gaviscon, or similar thick indigestion liquid should help. Rennies or similar tablets can neutralise some acid, but don't really stop overproduction of acid. If it's causing you a lot of problems, try something with ranitidine in it (I forget the names, but they look like little tablets). Failing that, go to the Dr, and he/she's prob give you Omeprazole or Lansoprazole which are pretty superb drugs.
As goldpro rightly says alot of it is due to lifestyle and diet.. over the counter remedies and prescription drups like ranitidine and omeprazole only block out the symptoms and offer a quick fix.. Even proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole can mask the underlying problem and after a while the body can compensate for the drug and you are back to square one or require a higher dose... We could always ask 'Dr' Gillian McKeith about this for an 'expert' opinion?
