I can only speak about attending computer science conferences but they are very informal, sometimes the speakers dress more formal but everyone else wears what they want. In saying that I know science conference attendees are usually well dressed. You could try asking some other students in your department to see what they wear!
I think it does tend to vary with the field so ask your supervisors/post-docs/fellow students for advice. However, my experience is the same as Jeremy's i.e. wear something smart on the day you present but it's usually fine to be more casual on the other days (especially if your conference is somewhere hot!). Have fun! :o)
