?Guys I joined in today. I need help. I completed MEng in electrical engineering and passed with a first 80%. I got a job and still working but the work ive done is so pathetic that I have decided to leave and do something else. The quality of work in industry or manufacturing is very bad. An apprentice should be doing what I am. Therefore I want to either go into consultancy or university. I have been offered a Research ASsistant job and its in the field im interested in. I have been told I could get a PHD too..weanted to ask oyu guys is this possible. Is it hard to get a phd while working as a RA as I would be working with a phd student too on the same project. And there is this consultancy job which promises to be great but i have lost confidence in jobs that if they can be interesting or not. is there anyone whos also got sick of jobs and want to go into research ..can u guys advice if it would be a good decisiion please.
thanks
i always say, go for what you're passionate about and have deep conviction of - otherwise it would be easy to succeed and be happy in it.
most jobs seem to be like that. you start by doing the crappy tasks and then you rise up the ladder. have you checked whether this is the situation in your field?
i know a couple of people who've been RA's first and then gone on to do their Phds. so i don't see that as being a problem.
though am probably not the right person to be advising you coz i've never been in your situation, i'e. work or phd, then RA or phd. perhaps someone more experienced can elaborate further.
Certainly it is possible. I did my PhD as a Research Assistant. Many research assistant posts are basically just 'salaried' PhD students. The drawback is that you are a member of staff and usually have to have a 2nd external examiner for your viva but don't let that put you off!
I would say go for it too. I did the same for most of my PhD and only changed to take a teaching job in the last six months. I actually found it very helpful to be honest.
