Johannstein,
If I didnt have any doubts then I would think there was something wrong. In my opinion, over confidence is a luxury that I can not afford because it doesn't fit with my personality. The point about there being many people capable I agree but that misses the point. I was testing the water to check if others felt the same. Lastly, I do not think I am wasting my time. I am enjoying the challenge and as long as I continue to feel that way then I will pursue my dream.
Hope this clarifies things for you.
Cheers
Johannstein - we would have removed your message had bazzab not already taken the time to reply. If you have an opinion then please express it in friendlier tones.
Jen - your comments have been edited for the same reasons.
Bazzab, if your supervisor(s) didnt think you were good enough, they wouldn't have given you such an opportunity.
It's now up to you to work hard and not let them think they had bad judgement. It sounds like you have what it takes, don't ever give up.
It's totally "normal" to have doubts, we all do. I'm not sure WHAT kind of pedestal a certain "pretend-scientist" thinks he is on but he WILL fall off it one day. It's fate.
I guess the unnamed person has ruffled feathers previously? I really enjoy quirky little qoutes. Does any one else know of any? Here is one I read today:
Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science
Charles Darwin (1809-1882)
My supervisor is also a master at making me feel rubbish. Don't take it too seriously.
On a lighter note- Here's my favourite saying:
The solution of pollution is dilution.
It referes to chemistry (i.e. just put it down the sink) and comes in handy if you've had too much to drink .... then again, if you've had too much I normally don't remember it anymore anyway?
Don't know who coined it, though.
I'm with you on this! I constantly feel like I should know more and feel stupid as confidence is not my strong point! As for my supervisor that's another kettle of fish - don't rely on them to make you feel better! Mine doesn't! You just have to tell yourself that you can do this and remember they chose you! Failing that work in the lab with undergrads who will make you laugh and be glad you're not one of them anymore!
