Hey all,
I am really interested in doing a PhD! Now is vital that I haven't got a 2:1 or a distinction in my MSc... I have a 2:2 and basically got a merit in my MSc!
Can someone help me... I really want to apply for a PhD but don't want to be held back because of my past qualifications!
Thanks!
Hi there! I think it will depend a bit on what subject and university you are applying to...I don't know of anyone in my department with less than a 2.1 but I certainly know of people in other departments with 2.2s and a pass at MSc level, so it certainly isn't impossible. It will probably help if you did well in the research components of your previous degrees. I think you should definitely contact the university or supervisors where you want to do your PhD and see what they say- I certainly think in terms of academic level you don't actually need a first class degree etc to be able to do a PhD, the main problem will lie with what your competitors have on their CV! It might be a good idea to get some work experience or a research assistant job or something first if you struggle to get anywhere, just to strengthen your CV etc. Give it a shot! KB
If I were a supervisor I would be looking for evidence to show me you would be good at research. So as suggested, an RA position would be great. Also you may want to collude with your ex-supervisor for your MSc research project and look into publishing it. even if it goes into the worst journal ever, at least it shows a passion for research and that you are developing your writing skills etc.
All of the other replies have been brilliant . You might also want to talk with your MSc Supervisor to see if they would suggest you do a PhD and whether they would be willing to recommend you, particularly if you intend to stay in the same field. They may even know of a suitable collaborator or university.
