I am nearing the conclusion of a Masters in Law (LLM) and I am looking in to the possiblity of taking up a Phd.

My undergraduate degree mark is very poor, however it may be possible for me to get a good mark for my masters, will this make any difference? Or will universities look at my complete academic record?

Any advice anyone is able to give will be really appreciated.

It really depends how poor and how good. I would expect your Masters mark to be key (but don't know the disciplinary area) tho of course this depends upon competition.

Universities will look at your whole academic record and where you got your degrees from, and what professional experience you have (which often acts as a substitute qualifications), but they'll be more interested in your most recent qualification.

Generally for a PhD you need:
a First UG degree
or
a 2.1 plus masters at high merit or distinction.

However, if you get a distinction or high merit at LLM, and particularly if you gain a distinction mark in a dissertation, you may still have a good chance of a place.

This is very generalised advice - you need to speak to individual uni's etc.
