Before you do that , I advise you to speak to your Student adviser in your dept , tell her how you feel , maybe there is a way out . Or change your supervisor making an excuse :)
To hold a student against a complaint made against him/ her is very unprofessional! I am sure you do not mean complain but more like giving your views on his supervison. am i making sense
Many people have difficulties with their supervisor at some point, and there are many examples of unfair treatment, often in the best groups. It is very rare to make complaints against supervisors and careers consultants tend to recommend you learn from the situation then forget it, rather than make a fuss. Academe is tough, and any reputation as a troublemaker/complainer will not help you get on.
hi JJ, am an international student and in my experience, no matter how much unis sing about equal opportunities, there are always those members of the faculty who look down on ethnice minority students. you have the following options: i) stand up to ur supervisor- don't give him the satisfaction of knowing that he is getting to you. ii) could it be different culture? sense of humour?? ask yourself these questions.
if it is, try to adjust to this strange character and get on with ur phd. iii) let your supervisor know that you feel offended by a particular thing- if he is approachable. iv) speak to your tutor and to the dean if they don't follow it up. in my first year, i chose to prove myself. i never gave the professor the satisfaction of getting to me.
Looking back, i wish i would have given him a piece of my mind or at least mentioned this to someone. in my masters this year, i approached the dean of studies and he agreed to get me a new supervisor. don let anyone harass you. you have every right to be here and you are just as equal as everyone else. stand up for yourself. no matter the cost. your supervisor couldn't possibly know enough people in this world to ruin your career.
