Finding postdoc opportunities

M

Hi guys,

Since I'm close to submission, I've been thinking a bit about my next step. I'd love to start applying for postdocs as soon as I submit.

How do you guys search for postdoc opportunities? I'd really like to apply to some postdoc "jobs" apart from fellowships. I love jobs.ac.uk for UK postdocs. Are there equivalent websites for American/Australian/EU postdocs? I'm in a STEM field.

Thanks ever so much!

You can always try "nature jobs" or similar websites. When I was looking for PhDs, I frequently looked on nature jobs and found that most of the new PhD positions in natural sciences were advertised there. I think however that this will be difficult. Majority of post docs are either paid by a fellowship or they got the position over connections. For one of the open post doc positions in my lab they had over 300 applicants and I was told that this is pretty much standard today. Some positions are only advertised because they are obliged to advertise it, even though they already have someone for the position. I guess you need an opening in more or less exactly the specialized field you did your PhD in to be competitive. But as applying doesn't cost anything but time, you can always try. Maybe your supervisor can pull some strings or knows some people in your field that might need a postdoc in the near future. That's probably the most promising way to find a position.
Good luck!

There's also the THE job site -> https://www.timeshighereducation.com/unijobs/ which has international posts - not sure how many are at post doc rather than more senior posts, but worth a look probably.

Thank you so much Dunham and IntoTheSpiral.

I'll take a look at THE and Nature. But reading Dunham's reply made me realise how much more proactive I can be with a job search. That's great also because the pool of people I can approach is now bigger.

Thanks guys, and the best to everybody!

On the other hand, I've just got an interview for a senior teaching associate and I was told only 10 people applied for the role! So sometimes it's not as competitive as people will have you believe.

But connections are important of course - yesterday someone just randomly asked me if I wanted to apply for their postdoc because the person who was supposed to start has dropped out. I said no because I don't want to, but to her I said it's not in my subject area and it's different techniques used. She said no worries, that can all be taught so apply anyway!
