funding+type of PhD

G

Hi,

This may sound daft but can the funding really be as low as £8K a year? This is awful! i know money is low to do a PhD and i wasn't expecting much but i was expecting at least £12 it is full time! How often does it occur that students get offered this little?

Also i would like to go into the pharmaceutical industry after my PhD, what is the likely hood with either a neuroscience or experimental pyschology PhD(based in neuroscience) i will be doing electrophysiology, a specialit skill often used in industry.

Thanks

Sarah

Don't forget that the money is tax-free. There is also the possibility that you could earn extra money demonstrating (usually well paid).

The money is tax free (making it equivalent to £9500 gross) Plus you can earn the up to single persons tax allowance (over 4000) tax free on top of this if you take on other work. It is more usual in science for a home student to receive around £11000, but it depends on who is funding your research. You should remember that a very high proportion of people doing a PhD in the UK (international students and those studying outside of science and medicine) receive far less than this and have to pay course fees on top.

You're eventual PhD will stand you in good stead for a job in the pharmaceutical industry.
