Hello, could someone give me some advises about doing a PhD in the UK, being German? I am now in my final year at UWE in Bristol and now thinking about doing a PhD in the UK. My big question is now: do you have any idea if Germany might cover my living costs and if it's worth applying? And if so, where could I apply? Or might there be a chance, that I get financial support of the UK anyhow? If you have any experiences with this, please let me kow. Cheers/Danke Kristina
As you probably already know, a UK research council grant will only cover EU students course fees. Did you come to the UK to do your degree or did you move here before then with your parents? (if so you may qualify for residency status).

Most pHD positions are funded by research grants etc which get paid to the university, the uni then pays you to carry out the work. So for most positions, you will be payed by the university. Any EU resident should in theory be able to study as a pHD student and be payed for it by the university they are studying at, in any of the EU countries. i'm trying to find something in sweden...
I’ve only recently read the message so the reply is late. I do not have any personal experience with answering this question but I have been told by a postdoctoral researcher that if you are a EU student then you may be eligible for a studentship to cover living expenses in the UK. If you find PhD vacancies which you are interested in which offer a studentship then it may be a good idea to contact the person offering the vacancy to see if the funding also applies to EU students or if there may be problems.
