getting a PhD submitting papers

Where and how is possible to get a PhD submitting published papers and books instead to a traditional way?

you can get a phd by publication. i think you have to write a shorter thesis, maybe 15,000-30,000 words, on how all your publications are related and could form a research degree. However I dont know the details so you should have a look on the internet for more details

As I understand it, you still need to be registered as a student etc in the normal way. However, you submit a thesis where the traditional chapters are replaced by your papers and you write some additional chapters (intro, methods, discussion) pulling the whole thing together. This option may not be available at some universities, perhaps the FAP team can comment? It's certainly an option at my institution but can't comment on any others :o)

PhDs by Publication are relatively new, but schemes do exist. Generally the previously published work counts towards the PhD, but course work and/or further research still needs to be carried out. As with a PhD by Thesis, the research needs to 'demonstrate an original and significant contribution to knowledge'. A context document or explanatory essay will also need to be submitted (anything from 5000-25000 words). Such degrees are usually only open to people who have a previous association with the university concerned (eg a member of the technical staff).

You should only approach a legitimate university (in the UK any institution with a .ac.uk web address). Beware of institutions which advertise 'Life Experience' PhDs on the internet - if it's not hard work, it won't be worth the paper it's written on.
