I keep discovering 80s songs that I really like without knowing that general opinion is they're rubbish - like "since you've been gone" (nearly 80s), "I just died in your arms tonight", something with a "sledgehammer" chorus, Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance", "Me, myself and I" (de la Soul), okay, I admit it, I can tell fine well that these are dodgy songs but I still like them! And I liked the Backstreet Boys and Justin Timberlake...which is a big admission for someone who's typically an indie rocker!
Sue, I have the whole of Raw Like Sushi on my iPod, LOVE Buffalo Stance & Manchild.
I also have De La Soul Magic Number, Tribe Called Quest Bonita Applebum & Can I kick it.
These are not songs of shame, they're too kool for skool.
BTW Sylvester you weren't by any chance listening to Bobby Friction & NihalON R1, last night were you? I heard them ask the Rishi Rich project the same question last night.
Sue - some interesting songs there. Sledgehammer was Peter Gabriel and the died in your arms song was the Cutting Crew. What's your favourite Backstreet boys song? Worryingly, I thought some of their records were okay, particularly I Want It That Way and Larger Than Life, the Backstreet's back song was okay. How sad am I?
Waterbaby - Tiffany, that record is legendary, if not just for the dance she used to do for the musical bit. Didn't she marry some bloke from Cannock (near Stafford) and is now living there?
Pea - Bonita Appledum. Only doiscovered this a few years ago despite it being 16 years ago. Catchy tune which I think samples an old Carly Simon record. Chas & Dave? Presumably you have Snooker Loopy?
Belinda Carlisle - Fancied her when I was 14 although in them days she was 28 which I thought was really old! Anyone noticed the similarity between Heaven Is A Place and Livin' On A Prayer?
wow chas & dave circa 79 - I'm impressed. I was going to say I have the acolade of seeing the 2xs once at The Hackney Empire & once at The Mudchute festival ( deepest darkest east-end family fun day on The Isle of Dogs), but both occasions have been in the last decade I think 79 trumps Hackney Empire!
Sylvester Bonita Applebum samples "why?" by Carly Simon. On the subject of samples have you ever heard the Grey Album by Dangermouse which samples acappella from Jay Z's black album and samples from The Beatles White Album. Dangermouse is the man behind Gnarls Berkely, which sends me into a frenzy of irratation everytime I hear that bloody over played piece of s*** excuse for a song "Crazy" played. Can't believe it's the same artist.
That's a shame, I was just about to pot the reds and screw back for the yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black.
I haven't heard the Dangermouse record, but I agree, that Crazy record has been seriously overplayed.
Here's another one for the dodgy but listenable archive - Paula Abdul - Opposites Attract
