Help!! Cant decide whether a masters will help me get a job!

S

I graduated from unilast july with a 1st in geography and really want to go into something environmental. But im finding it so hard to find a course i like the sound of and im really worried that if i decide to do a masters it wont be worth all the money becuase it wont get me a job! Ive been looking for jobs in the environmental sector for the last year and i dont seem to have the right qualifications for anything! does any one else have this dilemma or have an idea of how i could choose a course? or even any one got any good suggestions of courses in environmental stuff?

The Environmental field is very competitive so I was always told a Masters would be a good idea, as long as it's quite specific (e.g. an MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment, or Wildlife Conservation) and not a generic 'Environmental Science' Masters. I think they are more like conversion courses for people coming from different areas, though I'm not too sure.

Depends what field you want to go into though. If you wanted to work in an Environmental Consultancy then I get the impression from when I was applying for jobs that a Masters and a year or two of work experience is pretty crucial.

Hope that helps.

I have come from an architectural background and am encountering the same problem. Furthermore I will have to fork out international fees if I accept my place at uni- have been looking at MSc Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies at various UK unis. The course has a very fancy title, however I am not convinced that its worth a £10k study loan. Anyone else have any thoughts on specialised Enviro Masters? It's meant to be a potentially lucrative, emergent field.
