How to get funding for German students?

G

Hi,
I graduted in a biological subject. As a German citizen I only get funding for tuition fees. Does anyone know of programs or organizations that offer scholarships so I can to secure my living expenses? Or are there any other ways to get money?

I've heard there might be the possibility to work as graduate research assistant, but that apart from this as a PhD student you're not allowed to work to earn money - that's correct?

Thanks a lot. :)

I'm on an EU grant that covers my tutition fees and reciev a monthly maintenance grant. But it took me ages to find the position ... so keep looking. How about starting as a technician and then swapping over to do a PhD?? This is what another german girl here in the lab has just done, she'll be doing a part time PhD and part time technician job.

To the anon german: Thanks for your answer. :) I have some questions: Is the monthly maintenance grant enough for a living? And does the part time technician job of your friend provide her with enough money for a living?

G

Well, that would depend on where you are and how much rent you'll have to pay. I'm sharing a house with two others and pay 350 £ a months... so I get by fine but there's nothing left at the end of the month. A part time technichian will have to pay tax- but will still end up with a little more than me.
