interested in Phd in comp science

C

Hi..
I am interested in furthering my studies to a Phd level..I am looking out for foreign universities...but most of the emails I sent were replied..asking me to prepare a research proposal - should I do a proposal on the current projects that the certain supervisor is doing or how...

the other thing is..my programming level is not that good and my degree's results are not so good.. I am still improving.but now trying extremly hard..i was thinking of improving it and coming up with a prototype sorta thing that I can email to the potential supervisors so that they have more confident in me as my results definitely can't speak for me..

but how hard is it to secure a place to do Phd..I remember..my friends got through easily to do bachelor degree courses at UK and australia..despite not having a good cgpa.
and I am here scared to apply because..my cgpa is not enough..but I have recently completed my Master's in comp science.. I need some advice..

Hello Cally,

Research proposal is important because you will not be accepted without a proposal unless it is written by supervisor/uni and also because Phd is not a taught course;
If you have a good research proposal and ability/experience to peruse it then uni will not hesitate to offer you a place; having said that, your previous qualification plays very vital role, if you don't have good results previously then most supervisors/uni will offer you Msc by Research (1 year mostly) if you were successful you can go ahead and extend your research in Phd,

you can search this forum for research proposal threads :) I hope it will help you
best of luck

Hi thanks..for the reply..
Yeah..I understand that grades are important..in fact..my masters grade are better than my degree. I did both coursework and dissertation module..have produced 2 conference papers..I seriously need to write a journal..I think that would strengthen my application

I want to do something under computer visualisation, and i received B- for my signal and image processing paper, but my degree's results for computer graphics are not good at all.
So..actually..my masters included both research and courswork..how is Mphill or mres..different..compared to what I did.. and do you think it is possible for me to complete it within a year..people tend to drag..research degrees..

and..do you also think..when I contact a potential supervisor, I maybe..can attach some of the projects that I have completed...as my grades dun speak for themselves..at least that would give them some confidence in me..

what do you think...

Yes, conference papers/thesis/projects will help you alot, I will strongly suggest to arrange meetings with your potential supervisors and I can ensure that most of them will help you big time, they will make everything much easier for you; plus you can ask as many questions, and yes you can complete Mres in one year (depends on you)
