Hello,
I had an interview for PhD where I had to present my ideas on the proposed PhD. I was offered the PhD. However, the ideas I had lacked depth, understanding and feasibilty. (and I feel the panel knew this) I thought the presentation served the purpose of checking whether I had read around the topic etc. What I am worried about is that the supervisor now wants me to follow my suggestions. He has not (as yet) said what he thinks the PhD should cover. Am I worrying over nothing or is this strange?
Yes - you are worrying over nothing - at this stage your proposal should be an outline and prove you know a bit about the subject. My PHD has changed three times. You are not expected to know everything at this stage - that is why you are doing a PhD and not supervising one - don't worry and good luck.
The presentation was probably to show to the supervisor that you could come up with ideas etc on that particular subject, and that you showed enthusiasm. You're ideas are bound to change once you start and begin to read more indepth and try out new ideas.
I don't think anyone ends up with the PhD they thought they would be writing at the start - your ideas change and formulate as you do your research. I know my MSc dissertation was miles off what it started as, so imagine how much a signfiicantly larger project like a PhD will develop. Your only problem would be if your general subject area changed as then you may want to consider a different supervisor.
Definitely don't worry about it! I've just started and I'm not sure exactly what my project is about either. I know the methods that'll be used, the ideas behind them and research problem/questions, but not the finer detail! This way it allows your project to evolve and see what interesting paths it takes you! As long as your supervisor isn't worried you shouldn't be although I feel I'm a bit out of my depth as certain aspects of the topic are quite knew to me! My supervisor doesn't seem to mind!
