Hello All,

I got a reply from the human resources explaining the reasons for not getting the job interview and frankly I didn't quite understand what does it mean? would any one explain it to me please? am so confused :-(

Here what they have written "the general reason for a candidate not being short-listed would be that the interview candidates were a better match to our person specification, please see attached" Do they mean that other candidate were better matched? if so I don't think so! I ticked all the boxes for that job, am so angry. I just need to be sure that I understood the reply.

and by the way no file was attached!

thanks

Hi Someone, these things are generally a mystery to me, I think each department has its own agenda, and they probably know which candidates they want before the interviews - and things don't waiver that much from their existing opinions.

More charitably, maybe they mean that other people had stronger examples of the person spec qualities?

Big hugs though ((((((())))))) one day your work will be rewarded. ;-)

And what's to say all the other candidates and many more besides didn't tick all the boxes too?

A lot of these positions are already filled, they just advertise them because they have to. It's really stupid and annoying

Your frustration is understandable. If you closely fulfil all the criteria given in the person specification, you should at least get an interview. It is quite unlikely they would have had 5 other candidates that exactly matched the person specifications (most candidates would satisfy the majority of criteria, but not all criteria).

As someone said, they probably had someone in mind already. It's cruel on applicants who spend so much time preparing applications, hoping to be called for an interview in the next few days, only to be given the bad news in the end. In most cases they don't even send a reply - you just have to assume after 2-3 weeks that you haven't made it through!

I went to an interview some time ago, where I fulfilled all the criteria, gave a very good Powerpoint presentation on a relevant topic, answered all the questions without any problems (you know it when you have messed up an answer!) and yet didn't get the job. The reason? One of the interviewers had fallen asleep as soon as I started the presentation! He was literally dozing off!

What can you do? Nothing, really. At best, if you complain, they can give you another interview and then ask such difficult questions, you can never answer.

Hi Someone.

When you fill in an application you give evidence of how you fit the criteria in the job spec. When they say that other candidates were a better match to the criteria, it does not necessarily mean that you didn't. It's just that their evidence may have been stronger.

The current job market means that more and more people are applying for the same jobs and its becoming more difficult for employers in that they have so many applications to sift through. It would have been better for you if they were more explanatory in their feedback but don't take it as a strike against yourself. Just work on making your application stronger... and when you fill them in give details of experience or skills that aren't necessarily asked for in the person spec. Its not just about meeting criteria, but it is about selling your skills and experience.

I'm sorry you were unsuccessful this time, but keep going and you will get there! :-)

you shouldn't be angry at this point in time but rather you should be calling the hr department to find out what exactly do they mean, so that you can learn from this and decide what you should do next. Perhaps, the issue may lie in the way your CV is written.
