Let's go off topic: The finest words in the English language

S

I nominate the word "debauchery". It sounds great and very fitting for its intended meaning. I think everyone should have a weekend of debauchery at least once in their lifetime.

What other nominations do people have for great words?

T

Plethora, Judicial, Plinth, Moist, Exacerbate, Pamphlet are a few I like

E

Idiosyncractic, Gumption, Hell-bent (a word?), ubiquitous, fanny

F

Scrumpious & twisted...can think of some funny Scots but most people would not understand (mind I hardly speak it myself).

J

I like "defenestration". Such an important sounding word for such a stupid activity.

S

Superfluous

F

Ed, surely the word ubiquitous should never be followed by the word fanny?!

As for fave words, I'd have to nomiate minion and fiend! Just say them out-loud!

M

Spatula, oxymoron, paradox, myriad, flange (sorry)

S

Don't say oxymoron on here. Last time I used it I got lambasted (another great word) by an angry Dutchman in Glasgow.

T

Ooo and cacophony

A

I like impeccable.

C

I like the word 'florid'.

A

I like trituration - I used it in my thesis and one of the examiners asked me if it was a real word!

P

I'm with juno. Defenestration - it never ceases to amaze me that there is even a word for that.

Alibi...it sounds sordid, yet sexy.

T

Micturition is another good word hehe
