Hi all,
I am currently in the first year of a PhD in Pure Maths in the UK. I do not know many people within my department and I know nobody within my area. I am finding the PhD a struggle and would like to hear from other people doing maths PhDs to hear about their experiences and any advice they have. If anyone reading this is a first year/current PhD and also feeling academically lonely/isolated and like they have nobody to discuss things with, I'd be interested in hearing from you.
Thank you
I haven't done a Maths PhD specifically, but I just wanted to comment anyway and let you know that your feeling are quite normal for someone starting a PhD (or job).
Try to find other students to connect with in your department through joining clubs or societies or attending social events like coffee or poster sessions or seminars etc. Also maintain your social circle outside of the PhD as best as you can.
