MPhil vs. PhD

G

Dear all,

How is the MPhil degree regarded by employers (particularly in industry) compared to the PhD? Is it viewed as a failed PhD, or is it a 'proper', standalone qualification?

Cheers,
Rikard

MPhil degrees are made of paper, so I wouldn't bother

Most students sign on for a MPhil and are then transferred to a PhD, on satisfactory progress. You could see how things go in the first year and then decide what route to take. A PhD will give you better income and quicker promotion!!

Factually, MPhil is master level and PhD is a doctorate level. Masters are often lower than doctorates. In some countries these are different entities. Issues arise in MPhil/PhD: One can be given Mpil or PhD. PhD is higher than the MPhil and possible give more money and preferred by employers. However, some employers prefer MPhil holders because they do not need to pay higher salaries. Hence, difficult to pin down or give a specific answer. However, I will go in for a PhD despite the uncertainty.
