What is it you want to know?

Thanks for writing back. I want to know what is really being valued in a research study. Should we emprically try to prove our hypothesis that states a relationship between few variables? or try to challenge/extend/disprove existing theories/concepts/frameworks?

These are very broad questions, where the answer is 'it depends.'
