I have applied to do a PGCE course starting in September to lead to going into Educational Psychology. However, I have just read a position statement from the BPS saying that they will no longer accredit PGCE's or teaching experience towards becoming an Educational Psychologist. Instead there will be new 3 year educational psychology doctorates from sept 2005. However, I cannot find any information on these and the BPS haven't replied. Does anyone have any idea what institutions will be offering these courses and any idea about funding for them as the DfES are not supporting them?
i think this is BPS wishful thinking - the government has recently clarified that it will not fund 3-year training, so universities (I think 12 are BPS-accredited) cannot offer anything other than the 1 year training at present, requiring PGCE. the best thing to do is what youre doing & go ahead with the PGCE. i did research into this a while ago when i wanted to do Ed Psych - all interested parties (BPS, AEP, DfES, FENTO, TTA etc....) had a different take on it, and i got a number of different answers depending on which organisation i asked!
I too have applied for PGCE and start in September. Am very confused having heard diff things from diff organisations. However, just spoke to BPS and was told that more info will be available in next few weeks, but it seems unlikely that courses will be up and running by September 2005, and therefore I will probably carry on with PGCE. If anything, i am hoping that having teaching experience will help me with my application in 2006.
