Only a pass degree, but have a 2nd class Masters?

G

So thats the deal - I didn't do well in my undergrad degree. However, that was never a reflection on my ability, rather just a difficult time for me. I went on to do a Masters in Electronics and earned a 2nd class honours (with a 1st in my project for this masters). I'm curious to know just how badly my pass degree would weigh against me when applying to various institutes? Has anyone suffered something similar?

Was your Masters a 4 year undergraduate course? Did you get a 2(i) or a 2(ii)?

G

My Masters was a year long taught course. My undergrad was 4 years. My masters wasn't broken into 2i or 2ii, merely 1st, 2nd and whatever comes after that. By Standard conventions I believe it was a 2i though.

Same here! I also got what I believe was a 2(i) in my MSc but they don't grade them [ie. you get Masters with distinction (1st) and MSc (pass)] and a 2:2 in my BSc. I don't think it is a bad reflection upon you as I've only been asked once why I thought I got a 2:2 and it was by my current supervisor as I've just started a PhD with him! Luckily I had the answered prepared (thanks findaphd!)

Alot depends on your supervisor's impression of you (what he/she thinks are good attributes), your references and what you've done since your degrees. I tried to get a PhD after my MSc but was told I didn't have enough experience in my field as I changed direction within the broad area of environmental studies. I was trying for a PhD in the area of my MSc without much luck so I volunteered and got and PhD in that area! Alot of it was down to the excellent reference given by supervisor when I was volunteering!
