PGCE for Mathematics

P

Hi,

I have just finished my final year for a BSc in mathematics at the University of Birmingham and a few days ago I recieved my degree classifcation, which unfortunately turned out to be a 3rd. This was lower than what I was expecting (2.1), for various reasons that I shall not go into now.

In any case, I've been considering a career in teaching and I'm just wondering if this is still possible given that I have a third class degree?

My current uni still has places for a PGCE in Mathematics (one year course) and I'm already in the process of finding out where I stand, but I would really appreciate any advice or second opinions regarding this career path.

Thank you!

Well there is such a shortage of maths teachers I was asked to teach maths as a biology teacher - and I don't even have A level maths! So I think you're definitley in with a chance.

Yes you have a good chance but not if you apply to one of the 'top' uni's, go for a former university college etc and i'm sure they'll snap you up. Maybe you could get some teaching experience first as a teaching assistant as that would definitly improve your chances.
