PH.D. OR POST.DOC BY DISTANCE

K

Hello. I was wondering if there some acknowledged institutions offer the possibility of conducting a ph.d or post-doc research by distance or with minimum travel requirements. I appreciate your help.

S

do you mean at a distance from the uni your registered at?

K

No, I mean to be able to enrol and conduct a ph.d project by distance, without being physically present at the university which offers the phd programme.

S

oh ok. not sure if im understanding it correctly but people where i am are enrolled at unis all over the country / some other countries but do their project here. The open univeristy would probably be a good option too.

You still have to attend a normal university for OU PhDs.

I don't think you can really do a Phd long distance. To be honest you miss out on a lot of the experience of doing one, like attending departmental seminars and journal clubs and getting to see what other people are up to.

Hi Katarina

I think the university in Bath provides something like that, although have no personal experience.
Maybe try their website.

It depends very much on the subject. For example, I could actually live 100 miles away from my university and go there only every 3-4 weeks for supervision meetings, provided that I had access to the archives I need to research and possibly an Athens password to browse journals. If you are in a humanities or social sciences subject, this could be a solution, altought maybe you should agree first with your university how many times a month would you be required to travel, etc. In lab-based subjects I suppose it's much more difficult.
