PhD and mortgages

Hi I am trying to get a mortgage on my studentship but all the banks I have spoken won’t give me one. Any suggestions?

Hi Matthew A friend of mine bought a flat during her PhD (although this was about 8 years ago when property prices were considerably cheaper). To secure her mortgage, she persuaded her parents to be guarantors, could this be an option for you? Good luck.

Try to get a decent deposit, around 5% of the purchase price, that way the bank has collateral. Therefore you pose less of a risk! Try HSBC, they were excellent at arranging mine. I initially went with another mortgage company, 4 months and I’m still waiting for their decision! Keep us posted. All the best. If you don't have any look post back, you could always contact the guy who arranged mine! HSBC rules! (I dont work for them honest!) Meanwhile Toke and everytin be alrigh!

Hi Matthew. I managed to get a mortgage based on my studentship, in September last year. There is hope! Make sure you explain your situation to the mortgage advisor. Tell them that you have a studentship and it practically guarantees your income for the next three years. Get your university to issue a letter detailing your stipend, and take that with you. Also, ensure you are realistic with the house in question. The major banks will issue a mortgage of up to 3.5-4 times your annual stipend.
