PhD Book

G

I will start my PhD in Biology in Jan. I was wondering if anyone has read any of the mentioned books on this site? Any comments? Any other recommendations?

G

the books and weblinks are very poor on this site. If you go into a local waterstones there are many good research books in there, so you can flick through them there before you buy.

G

Thanks, Will do that. So have you read any of those books then? Why were they useless? Any specific recommendations?

G

There is not a vast range on this site, and they haven't been updated in ages. I have seen a couple of them in waterstones and they are quite expensive too. You will notice that the subject areas on this site are very limited, you will find much more in a bookshop. Also with regards to research guides, don't go overboard and buy too many, they all say the same thing in a roundabout way. I have 'Authoring a PhD Thesis' by Patrick Dunleavy, this is very good, but costs about £20.

G

Another good book is 'Your PhD Companion' by Stephen Marshall and Nick Green. This is a general overview, and gives many good tips. It is also cheap. I think i paid £6 for my copy

G

Thanks again for your suggestions! So Stu how long have you been a PhD student for?

G

Just started, so have been looking for these books recently so that I could make a good start.
