hi!
Yeah lucky in a sense but still cheap (I am PhDing in London).
Can I ask you from where you get your figures from?
As I need to speak with my supervisor about money.
Also is there any minimum PhD funding when the project involve Industrial Partners?
Timmy
There's no minimum studentship. However industrial partners for CASE or CAST awards are asked to contribute a minimum amount towards the students maintenance grant (around £2-3000 per year).
The trend in the UK has been for the value of research council studentships to rise above the rate of inflation. The value of studentships doubled in the ten years from 1990 to 2000 and will have nearly doubled again by the end of 2006. When comparing the value of a studentship to graduate starting salaries you should remember that a studentship is tax free, (making a £12000 studentship equivalent to a salary £15200). You are also left with a full tax allowance allowing you to earn a further £4700+ tax free (based on single persons tax allowance).
Hi, My PhD is departmentally funded and at present is £12,000 (Tax free) plus demonstrating at £10.95 an hour. Supposedly (at my institution anyway) the stippend will increase on average of about £1000 a year for at least the next 3 years. I think the idea is that by the time you are finished or in 3rd year you should be earning roughly what you would expect to start on as a post doc
The figures quoted here are tax free living costs allowances for UK research council funded studentships. These grants also include fees which are paid direct to the university.
Sarah - See our Funding and PhDs Explained sections for links and information. Funding can be subject specific. If you want more information then please start a new thread. However the best people to ask are academics in your area of interest - this could be a current course tutor.
