Thank you, to the 'astonished' student, for enlightening me about student funding. Alas, your reply reveals more about yourself rather than my apparent lack of intelligence. What a pity - you will eventually hold the highest of academic awards, and yet one wonders if you will ever really live up to it, in the fullest sense. Thank you, Anon, for your comment.
As astonished said, its not taxed and will be around 8-14 K a year. And you don't have to pay council tax, either. Most PhDs are funded for 3 years and if you are not finished by then you have to support yourself. Or, if you are very lucky, your supervisor will find some money for you. Unfortunately it is very very common for people to take longer in my field (biology) because sometimes the experiments just won't work properly.
