PhD in Tourism

G

Hi,

Basically, I finished my BSc (hons) in Tourism Management 2 years ago, unfortunately with a 2:2, but I’ve been working for Thomas Cook for over 5 years, and I’ve been told +5 years work experience can be taken in lieu of a 2:1.

I’m looking to do a PhD by distance learning, so I can remain in Thomas Cook.

1) What institutions run distance learning PhD’s in Tourism?
2) Is it possible to obtain part-funding/full-funding for PhD’s by distance learning in the area of Tourism?

Kelly.

You should probably think about a Masters qualification first?

Do you want an academic career and/or do you have a research area that you want to pursue. If not then you would be better advised taking a Masters degree that would help you with your current career.

Hi FindAPhD Team,

My overall ambition is to one-day get involved in academics at University level. But before that, I would like to get more Industrial experience. I thought that by doing a part-time PhD, it would 1) improve my chances of getting into academia, and 2) perhaps might lead me to better jobs in industry whilst I'm still studying.

Thank you for your advice.

In that case go for the PhD. Funding will be hard to come by, particularly if you want to study part time. If you want to continue in your present job go through the web site(s) of your local university(ies) with a fine tooth-comb looking for potential supervisors. Write to them and see if they'll take you on. If so, you can then begin looking for funding.
