If I were you I would throw caution to the wind and wear a smart suit. For my interview I dressed smartly, had a hair cut and shave, polished shoes etc, but the interviewing panel where very 'casual', I suppose to put you at ease! I don't think you can go far wrong if you are dressed immaculately! Good luck Colin, Ginger
I had a PhD interview a few weeks ago and wore a suit-good move it was noted and once your there makes you feel much more confident! As far as what you should know for interview-be firm on why you want it, why that institution, read any published papers by department your being interviewed by. The interviewer will lead the way but try and avoid silences ie have ques prepared incase of a lul and big one stay interested with eye contact.
As well as asking you about why you want to do that PhD and about your university project, they might ask you questions about what particularly insterests in you science to see how much you read around. Some questions which may be asked are things like what research do you think deserves a Nobel prize or if you could ask God any question and get the answer what question would you ask.
As for what to wear, I would wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Most people just go smart casual, put a suit can make a good impression.
The questions vary depending on the style of interview! Some of them are quite easy-going to make you feel relaxed whereas some are very high pressured and quite intensive and a very good way to un-nerve you! I must say I've always been asked relevant questions to project and topic (science) so haven't been asked any of the open ended questions Becky suggested. Know who is considered top in your field as I have been asked that before.
I'm not sure what you should wear but I think wear what you feel comfortable in! I've been to interviews where people are very casual, smart casual and in suits. I've always worn a suit but always feel overdressed and not at ease in one so I think that may show and affect interview performance! I think I'm going to try to smart casual even though I bought a new suit at Christmas and haven't got round to trying it out!
