hey guys,
i have an phd offer from the university of manchester.
I have been offered full tuition fee waiver for internatioal fee but no maintaneance...its a cool research project though...should i take the offer..is it possible to take part time job apart from demonstrating at univ...and abut the university...is it worth taking the risk..cheers...and good luck to all
Unless you have a decent financial position coming into the course, you'll probably need a loan to get you through it, as part-time work will only help you so much with living/accomod costs. Waivered fees at a good univ at Manchester is very good though and I'd accept it unless you have a better offer pending.
The University of Manchester is one of the top universities in the UK. As we always say on this site, it is the supervisor and the departments reputation you should consider, not the University - there are good departments in bad universities and bad departments in good ones. The most important thing to look for is the Research Assesment Exercise rating (5* is the best).
You should not rely on part time work for financial support. You will not always have time for a second job. Also you should check that you are aloud to work whilst studying in the UK. Nowadays most people are, but you should confirm this before you arrive.
Better get your finanaces sorted b4 coming to UK. If you already know people from your country in Man Univ. your livin cost will drop, otherwise...well it is expensive to say the least. Better have a word with your supervisor..dept might have some assistanceship positions or the Prof. might be able to get some school funding for maintenance. Also before you decide to come - Man is a big city with areas ranging from very expensive to affordable and normal living cost for an international student under financial restrictions will come out to be around 6000 pounds.
GoodLuck
