While I have wanted to do a PHD for a while, I have struggled to find people who have PHD's that I would like to be similar to. This is strange and has worried me, because in every other ambition I have, there are people who I aspire to become.
A key reason for me coming on this site was to find just 1 person who shares a similar sense of humour and disposition to myself, in order to reassure myself that doing a PHD won't make me "become" someone I don't like.
I am sad to announce that the recent "joke" of repeatedly dragging up old posts and answering them with amusing answers has confirmed my worst fears. Is this what I want to become? After deliberating long and hard, I have made the decision not to take on a PHD on thus basis.
As the chief culprit for the recent spate of recycling old threads, I haven't actually started my PhD yet so I'm no PhD role model (and to be frank I'd be worried if anybody thought I was). I freely admit I post my fair share of drivel on here. However, I also provide serious answers to serious posters. If this board merely comprised a serious answers to serious questions it would be a very dry, very quiet board. The Mods recognise this which is why they allow us to have our bit of fun as well.
Everybody has a different sense of humour and I'm sure if (or when) you start your PhD you will find likeminded people.
Worrylingly, you make the suggestion that no one on this board is good enough to be a role model for you. Worse still, you imply that we are all the same. If you follow conversations, we have a wide variety of posters on here with differing views on life.....
.....I do find it a slightly strange position that you automatically assume that the doing a PhD will make you into the type of person you do not like. Surely, as one who is considering a PhD you must appreciate that a PhD is what you make of it, as is life in general. We don't all become clones! Best of luck in whatever you choose.
I dont understand, why do you want to be like other people? Surely you make the decisions in YOUR life to make you a better person (in your eyes) and that should have nothing to do with what other people say and do. You should decide to do a PhD because YOU think it would be good for you rather than because you want to be like someone else.
Yes there are people on here who do say silly things (me included) but it's only for some light relief. Doing a PhD is tough, no one will deny that. We all need a break now again and people express that differently. How can you place everyone on this forum into the same group i.e bring up old threads. It was actually only DanB, then Sylvester and me (to find out how Neil and onwards&upwards were doing).
