Hi, I have a 2.1 in Geography and have recently completed MA Human Geography. However, I think that I am only going to get a 'pass' grade Masters. How badly will this affect the chances of getting PhD funding should I choose to do this in the future. Do Universities/funding bodies only want people with merits and distinctions or will a pass do?
It depends really. If the funding is from one of the research councils, then it is up to the university to stipulate the entry requirements from the course. They may just ask you to get your MA i.e. without specifying any grading. Or they might ask you to achieve a certain overall percentage in your masters (as happened to me).
I've been awarded a conditional PhD studentship from Sheffield if I 'successfully complete' my masters. I expect any concrete stipulation will be by percentage, as masters grades vary - for example, UCL doesn't even 'do' merits - it's either a distinction or pass (or a fail). Best thing to do would be to ask the uni concerned.
