I am practically at the end of my third year PhD program in Computer Science, I have not publications, and what is worse from my point of view is that again I have received the same de-motivational feeling after meeting with my supervisor, and again a similar answer as "Regan, no papers for this Phd.".
I would like to work in a paper but as soon as I came with the idea, my supervisor just simply look at me, and shows not approval. I am lost and embarrassed to accept that my thesis will not have any publications, this is very shame from my point of view, so many times I feel that It is better to drop out.
Is this normal ? what exactly am I doing wrong? can I have some advice to see how can I face this ? Or is this some communication issue from my side?
Thank you so much from this desperate and unlucky Phd Student.
Regan.
Definitely don't think you should drop out. If you're in your 3rd and final year you may as well submit! I'm rather new to this but I know people that publish hardly anything or nothing and try to make up for it after they've received their PhD, I've heard of people taking and polishing what's in their PhD for a paper before.
I absolutely agree with Semaphore. I know people who didn't publish during their PhD also. They are now working on turning some of it into publications or a publication (depending). If you talk to more people at your institution I am sure you will find that not everyone has published already. So yes, normal.
Be proud of yourself that you have got this far and will have yourself a PhD.
I agree with the above posts.
Publishing is not an essential part of the PhD process. If you can get them, great, if not, it is ok as it is not a requirement. As others have said above, you can certainly send publications out once the PhD process is over. I would imagine that would be an easier approach as it will be a case of converting chapters into papers.
