Hi all!
I'm a PhD student at Sheffield Uni and I'm finding it difficult adjusting to the post grad life. The problem is that everyone is boring and dull!
Is every post grad scene dull and boring or have just entered the abyss? I know it's an academic environment but it takes the piss...will all the nerds and geeks at sheffield uni liven the f&^£ up and remove the thesis from their rectum! Yeah, you know who you are!
Are all uni's the same?
Every workplace is different. However, the attitude that comes across in your post is that you have nothing but contempt for your colleagues. They are probably picking this up and don't want to socialise with you!
Did you decide on postgrad study because you wanted life to carry on as it was as an undergrad? Like it or not, you have made a commitment to full time research, which should be viewed as seriously as a full time job. You can still play hard, but you will need a more mature attitude, and to work hard too!
Hmmmm! Hi recent post grad. You, as an academic should know never to judge a book by it's cover!
As for the maturity factor, you have no idea! As an undergrad, the people I got on with most and had the most respect for was the acedemic staff. I'm not a snotty undergrad who's looking to extend the uni life and in it just coz i don't want a job. I'm serious about research and want a career in academia, just wouldn't mind have a laugh while i'm getting there.
Cont...
You made a typical post grad mistake by thinking I'm a chancer with disregard for my colleagues, it's the exact opposite, I'll talk to any1 and i'm outgoing and don't make people feel alianated. Just thought i'd set the record straight!
Posted the thread coz I was annoyed at the time, but i've seen the errors of my ways, all thanks to you doc!
Im a bit confused as to where the rest of this thread has disappeared to. Find a PhD Team you're surely not censoring this forum?! Very undemocratic. Anyway Toke Toke Pass, I had exactly the same problem as you when started my 1st year. However I have recently joined the Uni Dance Music Society and have found a few other postgrad nutters like myself. Definately worth the £7 joining fee!!
Would I dare imply such a remark?! Surprised as in; was not to my expectations. More like a refreshing change in environment. It is not all dull after all. There is a glimmer in the distance. So Ann, by interpretation of your thread it seems you are blessed with both traits…..
