NUS are launching their postgraduate teacher survey
NUS will be working with students' unions and the UCU to launch a nationwide survey of postgraduate teachers. The survey covers a number of contentious areas, such as: pay, contracts, application process, workload, training, and feedback.
We know that there is wide disparity in the treatment of postgraduate students who teach at their universities. What we don't have is comprehensive national data on the issue. The lack of data for national comparisons has prevented the spread of good practice and the public acknowledgement of unfair treatment.
Data from the survey will be collected over the next six weeks and will hopefully provide a detailed map of practice at universities in the UK. NUS will be launching a campaign on the back of this research in January 2013 to champion and share good practice, whilst identifying and intervening where postgraduate teachers are getting being treated unfairly.
National results will be made public in January, whilst students' unions will also receive specific data on their own university.
Robin Burrett, NUS NEC member for postgraduate research students, will be leading the campaigning in the new year, working closely with students' unions and the UCU to promote the fair treatment of postgraduate teachers.
This survey is a chance to really make a difference to hundreds of postgraduate students around the country, so please advertise the survey and get as many postgraduate teachers as possible to take part.
