When I'm ready to submit, I want to know whether professional proof readers are worth using or just asking favours from friends or fellow students is better.
Does anyone have any experience on this matter?

I think a proof reader can be a little bit more 'harsh' if you like in that they will won't worry about offending you. This is sometimes an advantage because they won't be biased towards you and judge work on its inherent merits.
